2018 Champions Crowned
Michael Church brings us all of the weekend’s action in the Men’s and Women’s Club Championships.
A sudden death play-off to decide the Men’s Champion highlighted the final day of the 2018 Club Championships. Harley Cindric and Dan Wright who were equal winners of the James Lavender Cup had battled it out since the first round and to be all square after 72 holes was a fitting result for their efforts and the time they had both given to be in top form for the event.
Dan had shot 71 to make up four shots during the final round however Harley who said he was nervous on the first tee in the play-off in front of a large gallery of members was the eventual victor. Jack Chrystie who had challenged for the lead mid-round and Matt Bluett who both shot 72s finished tied for third just two shots behind Harley and Dan. It was one of the closest fought finals in recent years with four players all in with a chance to win.
Vanessa Agius regained her Championship title with a comfortable win ahead of 2017 Champion Kayli Schenk. Exams over and school on-side Vanessa was able to give all of her attention to the event and her form over the four rounds was too much for her challengers. Joyce Agius finished third ahead of Kaitlyn Adam.
Sam Ward with 76 played the best round of the Northern Cup event to come from five shots behind second round leader Josh Creasey to win by four shots from Peter Pugliese and George Lymbouris in a closely contested final round. Joe Seratore shot a final round 84 to tie with Josh Creasey in fourth place.
Vic Ristovichis who said he gave his opponents plenty of opportunities was eventually too steady in the Glenroy Cup and won by shots from Frank Mott with Peter Chamberlain and 2017 Champion Anthony Ciabotti tied in third place.
Bev Leyden surprised herself with a final round 93 to come from five shots behind and win over second round leader Jan Boulton. Bev said she was having a lucky weekend. Glenis Church and Sue Bullen finished in third and fourth places.
Yvonne Backerra, who won by two shots from Jo Doherty, said that the Glenroy Cup was her first win since joining the club in the past year. Yvonne and Jo had both had turns at leading during the event and the final was fought to the last hole. Diane Reardon and Shirley Bult played well to finish third and fourth.
Zac Wood who has made great improvements in his game won the 36 holes Junior Championships by three shots from Rata Lata. Nathan Bratanata won the Best Nett. Zac thanked his coaches for their support.
Dale Collins won the 36 hole Veterans Championship ahead of second and third place-getters Joe Gentile and Phil Constable. Bill Conroy won the Best Nett.
John Bradley won Super-Veterans 36 hole nett event from John McCormack and Michael Church in third place.
Congratulations to all of the winners in the 2018 Club Championships.
