Tassie Raiders Scoop the Pool, Kooringal too!
The tables have been turned at Northern this week. Northern’s history of members having won in Tasmania; Ron Smith in the 50s, Bruce McClure in the 60s and James Lavender in recent years came back to bite us on Monday when two girls from the Apple Isle won four of the six major prizes in the Northern Junior Open. They wouldn’t have known the background when they entered our tournament, and they still don’t. They most likely entered because our event has a great reputation, we have a great course and it was school holidays anyway.
They were also our tournament’s first interstate winners. The girls were among a record entry of 33 girls in our event in a field of 110 players in the morning and afternoon events that made up a most successful 28th Annual Northern Junior Open, our best since the pre-Covid days.
Mackenzie Thomas from Royal Hobart was the outstanding player of the tournament winning the Girls Overall Stroke and the 15 & over Stroke events with 76. Her fellow Taswegian, Kirri Piper from Launceston won the Girls Overall Nett and the 14 & under handicap events with a 69 nett score. Nicolette Papadatos (Medway) won the Girls 14 & under stroke and Elsa Sima (Woodlands) won the Girls 15 & over nett events.
The Boys events were dominated by Kooringal players. Hugo Wortley won the Boys 14 & under stroke and the Boys Overall event too with 72. Sonny Holden, also from Kooringal, won the Boys 15 & over handicap and the Overall Nett with 63 nett. Kasem Saetang (Riversdale) won the Boys 14 & under nett and Hamish Craig (Clifton Springs) won the Boys 15 & over stroke events.

Rookie Series
The Rookie Series is a pathway for Juniors learning golf to experience playing in tournament conditions. The golf course is set up shorter with par 3-hole lengths at 100m, par 4 hole lengths at 200m and par 5 hole lengths at 300m. Players are supervised on course and not only learn the skill of playing competitive golf, but learn the important attributes of player etiquette and course care. Thank you to all parents and Golf Australia Staff who helped organise and run the event.
